रहीम के दोहे:अहंकार है आदमी के छोटे होने का प्रमाण

बड़े पेट के भरन को, है रहीम देख बाढि
यातें हाथी हहरि कै, दया दांत द्वे काढि
कविवर रहीम कहते हैं कि जो आदमी बड़ा है वह अपना दुख अधिक दिन तक नहीं छिपा सकता क्योंकि उसकी संपन्नता लोगों ने देखी होती है जब उसके रहन सहन में गिरावट आ जाती है तब लोगों को उसके दुख का पता लग जाता है। हाथी के दो दांत इसलिये बाहर निकल आये क्योंकि वह अपनी भूख सहन नहीं कर पाया।

बड़े बड़ाई नहिं तजैं, लघु रहीम इतराइ
राइ करौंदा होत है, कटहर होत न राइ
कविवर रहीम कहते हैं कि बड़े आदमी कभी अपने मुख से स्वयं अपनी बड़ाई नहीं करते जबकि छोटे लोग अहंकार दिखाते है। करौंदा पहले राई की तरह छोटा दिखाई देता है परंतु कटहल कभी भी राई के समान छोटा नजर नहीं आता।

वर्तमान संदर्भ में व्याख्या-कहा जाता है कि धनाढ्य व्यक्ति इतना अहंकार नहीं दिखाता जितना नव धनाढ्य दिखाते हैं। होता यह है कि जो पहले से ही धनाढ्य हैं उनको स्वाभाविक रूप से समाज में सम्मान प्राप्त होता है जबकि नव धनाढ्य उससे वंचित होते हैं इसलिये वह अपना बखान कर अपनी प्रभुता का बखान करते हैं और अपनी संपत्ति को उपयोग इस तरह करते हैं जैसे कि किसी अन्य के पास न हो।

वैसे बड़ा आदमी तो उसी को ही माना जाता है कि जिसका आचरण समाज के हित श्रेयस्कर हो। इसके अलावा वह दूसरों की सहायता करता हो। लोग हृदय से उसी का सम्मान करते हैं जो उनके काम आता है पर धन, पद और बाहुबल से संपन्न लोगों को दिखावटी सम्मान भी मिल जाता है और वह उसे पाकर अहंकार में आ जाते हैं। आज तो सभी जगह यह हालत है कि धन और समाज के शिखर पर जो लोग बैठे हैं वह बौने चरित्र के हैं। वह इस योग्य नहीं है कि उस मायावी शिखर पर बैठें पर जब उस पर विराजमान होते हैं तो अपनी शक्ति का अहंकार उन्हें हो ही जाता है। जिन लोगों का चरित्र और व्यवसाय ईमानदारी का है वह कहीं भी पहुंच जायें उनको अहंकार नहीं आता क्योंकि उनको अपने गुणों के कारण वैसे भी सब जगह सम्मान मिलता है।
